Octopus (Japanese: オクトパス, Hepburn: Okutopasu?) [Japanese name: Devil of the Sea] is one of the final bosses in the original Darius. It is shaped after a common octopus (Octopus vulgaris).

Attack ship with 8 legs that come with built-in weapons on each of them. they can fire independently, and also serve as a stabilizer for posture control during navigation.

Appearance

Darius/Darius R

In Darius and Darius R, has a sleek cephalopod design. Its body is mostly red with multiple segmented arms that resemble tentacles, tipped with bright yellow spots. The head is metallic and silver, giving it a robotic look, with blue highlights around its gold eyes. Its overall shape blends the form of an octopus with mechanical armor, making it look both organic and machine-like.

Super Darius/Darius Plus/Darius Alpha

In Super Darius, Darius Plus and Darius Alpha, it has a bright pink body with long, jointed arms ending in yellow spots. Its head is metallic silver with blue details, giving it a robotic appearance. The overall design still mixes an octopus shape with mechanical features.

Darius II

In Darius II, Octopus has a darker red body with mechanical tentacle-like limbs marked by glowing yellow spots. Its head is silver and metallic, with blue highlights around the gold eyes, giving it a robotic look.

Super Darius II

In Super Darius II, Octopus appears with a purple-red body and long mechanical limbs tipped with glowing yellow spots. Its head is silver and rounded, with blue details that give it a robotic look, keeping the octopus-like shape mixed with machinery.

Darius+

In Darius+ (Amiga), Octopus keeps its mechanical cephalopod form but appears in different color variations depending on the zone.

Zone C

Bright red body with yellow spots on its limbs and a metallic silver head.

Zone G

Brown body with pale yellow details, still with a robotic silver head.

Zone I

Purple body with orange-yellow spots and the same metallic head.

Zone S

Brownish body with white and gold accents, keeping the machine-like shape.

Zone U

Blue body with orange-light blue details and silver head.

Zone W

Gray body with pale yellow spots, more subdued in appearance but still robotic.

Gameplay

Darius, Darius Plus, Darius Alpha, Super Darius, and Darius-R versions

Octopus will move up and down while constantly firing lasers from its tentacles as well as a bullet spread from its mouth. The tentacles can all be destroyed, severely lowering its firepower and making the fight easier. Its weak spot is between its eyes.

Darius+

In Darius+, aim for the lower-right tentacles, the lower-left, the left, the upper-left, then the eye. Destroying all these components in order will destroy the enemy. Note that the eye sometimes glitches, making the fight unwinnable. The cause of this glitch is unknown.
